“Dirtiest man in the world” died after his first bath
24X7 Voice 9: An Iranian man nicknamed the “dirtiest man in the world” for not taking a shower for decades has passed away. He was 94. Amou Haji – The elderly man, whose last name was not his real name but an endearing nickname given to elderly people, died on Sunday in the village of Dejgah, the New York Post reported, citing state media.
IRNA (Islamic Republic News Agency) reported that Haji had shied
away from taking showers out of concern about "becoming sick. However,
"villagers had taken him to a bathroom to wash" for the first time a
few months prior.
According to the New York Post, Haji spent the majority of his life alone in an open brick hut that the locals built for him after he began sleeping in a hole in the ground. Because he thought being clean would make him ill, the Iranian decided not to wash for more than 60 years.
Mr. Haji previously said that emotional losses in his upbringing led him to choose this unusual lifestyle. He has been alone ever since.
As well as cleanliness, Mr. Haji also had an aversion to fresh
food and drink. His favourite food was rotten porcupine, and he would choose to
drink water from a rusty oil can.
Amou Haji preferred to use an old pipe to inhale animal faeces
instead of tobacco, as if his life wasn't already unusual enough. Haji's
unusual behaviour was attributed by the locals to "emotional
setbacks" in his youth. The Tehran Times stated in 2014 that Haji
allegedly smoked a pipe made out of animal excrement and shunned fresh meals in
favor of rotten porcupine. According to reports, a short documentary film
called "The Strange Life of Amou Haji" was created in 2013 to explore
his life.
