24X7 Voyes 9, Mumbai: On Monday, a leopard attacked the Aare Colony in Goregaon, a western suburb of Mumbai, and killed a one-and-a-half-year old baby. According to an Aare Thana police officer, the event occurred at around 6.30 am while the girl and her mother were on their way to the temple. The temple is about 30 feet away from his house. The leopard attacked the girl, the police officer claimed, severely injuring her.
The child died while being
taken for treatment at Seven Hills Hospital in Andheri East.
Last year, a leopard attacked
several people in Goregaon. It attacked a 55-year-old woman inside the Aare
Colony in Goregaon. This was near Aare Dairy. The CCTV footage of the incident
showed a 55-year-old woman, Nirmala Rambadan Singh, leaving her house with a
stick in her hand. When she started sitting on the verandah, the leopard
ambushed and attacked her. The leopard also attacked a batch there, which was
saved.
The police officer said, "On the basis of primary information, we have filed an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in the case. Further investigation is going on. Meanwhile, the Forest Department has launched an action plan to prevent conflict between humans and wildlife in the area. He said that the Forest Department has called for help from a team of the Reskink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW).
The official said that the
authorities have deployed a wildlife ambulance, a wildlife crisis response
team, and volunteers from the Mumbai Forest Department. He said rescuers,
leopard specialists, veterinarians, and senior officials of the forest
department will be continuously stationed in the forest area of Aare Colony
throughout the week. It is reported that this is the third incident in the area
in less than a month.
The official said that patrols
will be carried out at night and "camera traps" will be installed to
identify and monitor leopard activities. Located near Sanjay Gandhi National
Park, Aare is considered an important forest area of Mumbai. There have been
many incidents of leopard attack in this area before.
